Saturday, February 27th, 2010

Skateboarding might have started in the United States, but the USA doesnt own skateboarding - not by a long shot! Skateboarding has taken off all over the world, and in each country it looks a little different (or sometimes a LOT different!). Ive interviewed skaters from several different countries - click on the country you want to read about! Id like to see this international list grow - if you want to share your own experiences, Im looking to interview pro skaters and regular skaters from all over the planet.br /

Whats it like to skate in Egypt? br /
Skateboarding is a new sport to Egypt introduced by skateimpact.com in 2005 which gathered skaters and promotes skateboarding through its team, and they are doing a very good job distributing the best known US brands. Baxter Jackson says, Grinding round Cairo is a bit like skating the streets of 70s California - curious (and vocal) audience guaranteed. br /

What kinds of skateboarding are there? br /
Street skating, thats what we currently have, we get together and hit all available spots. But the skatepark idea is getting a better consideration by private clubs.br /

What does it feel like to be known as a skateboarder in Egypt? br /
Egyptian skateboarders feel that we are part of an independent sport that is not about competition with each other. Its a competition between yourself and gravity, progressing and pushing the Egyptian scene forward. We feel that skateboarding is our lifestyle….it is more than a sport or wood with wheels. We breath and discuss skateboarding…you hang out with your friends doing something useful instead of smoking shisha and discussing about singers and other useless topics. The best part is that all the skaters feel that we are brothers and more than friends……..we have the same interest and enthusiasm. We hangout together, see them in sessions and talk everything skate.br /
What kinds of places do you skate at? br /
br /
Any spot with smooth surface… We usually skate in the streets, sporting clubs, around carrefour the hypermart or any spot which is skateable. We get kicked out from a spot…we switch to another one!! In Cairo, around Tiba is the most loved spot in Egypt…around mogamaa el tahrir and any skateable terrain we may find. What we really need in the mean time is a skate park for real. The skateboarders here will never be able to compete internationally in global competitions like X games and Globe world cup without practicing in a skatepark. I hope one day, we get one in Alexandria and Cairo.br /

What is it like to shop for skateboarding gear? br /
br /
Before Skatimpact we had to wait for a relative to get us one from abroad, or if a friend traveling to any close country like Italy or Greece to buy our gear. That was not logical because how could the scene evolve?? The decks get broken frequently because of the abuse…so what happens is that once someone breaks his deck…he stops for months till he gets one from abroad…so his level of skating drops fast when he stops.br /

Skatebard Slangs.

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

Whether you are a new skater or just trying to understand what your skater kid is talking about, understanding skateboard slang is important! Skateboard slang might be hard to grasp at first, but its not that tough to understand once you understand skateboarding culture a little better. Im going to walk you through some basic skateboard slang, and help you understand what the words mean.br /
Slang for Skateboards - The skateboard itself has a lot of names, but its usually just called a skateboard or board. Its best not to try and get too fancy! Sometimes youll hear the word deck - that refers to the wood plank part of the skateboard. Ive heard guys call skateboards things like wood or ride, but these sound a little weird, like the guy is trying too hard to sound like a skater.br /
br /
Slang for Skateboarders - Skateboarders are called skaters almost all the time. I know that ice skaters are also called skaters, and this can be confusing when searching for things on the internet, but ice skaters and skateboarders are almost never in the same place at the same time, so its not a problem in the real world! Skaters can sometimes be called boarders, but usually only when someone is trying to sound clever, like in hte title Boarders for Christ or Boarders Skate Shop.br /
br /
Slang Skaters Use - There are piles of words that youll hear skaters use, and these are often home-made, and unique to each skater. For example, I call things that I think are really cool, sexy. Not just women, but anything. But thats unique to me (and my roommates say it now sometimes, but thats just cuz Im that sexy).br /
br /
But there are piles of words that most skaters use. Here are the most common:br /
br /
Sick - this means the same as cool or for you older guys, rad. Pretty much anything can be sick. You can pull off a sick trick, have a sick board, or a skatepark can be sick. Its one of those slang words like bad was a decade ago, meaning the opposite. Along with sick, something really cool might get called ill, insane, gnar (short for gnarly), or even rad or righteous.br /
br /
Stoked - to like something or to be excited. I am stoked that you are reading this. Im stoked I can land a tre-flip. The word comes from making a fire bigger - when you add fire to it, or fan the flames, you are stoking the fire.br /
br /
Sketchy - not well done, or not trustworthy. A sketchy trick looked badly done (clean is the opposite - a clean trick looked flawless). A sketchy person is someone who you dont want to bring home for dinner. A sketchy skateboard is a piece of junk that might break. I think its funny that the shoe company Sketchers tries to make shoes that LOOK like skate shoes, but are, in fact, sketchy.br /
br /
Bail - to bail is to either fall, or to jump off of your board right before falling. It doesnt get used all the time though - some people just say to fall or crash. The word bail is more traditional in skateboarding, but if the people you are around dont use it, you might sound like youre trying to hard if you insist on saying bail all the time!br /
Poser - this is someone who looks like a skater, or who claims to be one, but who doesnt know anything about skating. This term can be pretty hurtful, so dont use it lightly. And its tough to know if someone truly IS a poser. a href=http://rettaskateshop.com.br target=_blankSkate shop/a - a href=http://rettaskateshop.com.br target=_blankloja de skate/abr /
